String Quartets
A string quartet or small group of chamber music players may be appropriate for small weddings when classical musical accents are desired. The string quartet will likely have experience playing in formal or semi formal settings. Members of a string quartet will probably have fun variations on very traditional music that are appropriate for an intimate setting but not really playable in an orchestral context.
A string quartet can be ideal when a fairly short reception is planned, and the quartet will provide music in the background. At a small reception with 50 to 100 guests, a string quartet fills the background nicely. The string quartet will be able to play a few formal dance tunes if some of the guests want to dance. They might also be able to take requests from more classically inclined musical wedding guests.
A string quartet will likely have its own repertoire and schedule of music they know how to play. If the bride and groom have requests, the string quartet should have time to practice in introduce them into their repertoire. The string quartet therefore lends the classical touch of elegance with some flexibility during the musical portion of a wedding reception.
Quartets may also play the ceremonial music as well during the processional and recessional. Additionally, a string quartet may be nice to have during a cocktail hour or cocktail party prior to the wedding reception. This offers a chance for the bride and groom to welcome guests - or even finish photos if there wasn't time prior to the wedding ceremony.
